Unagi Don
It was my first time trying the Kansai-style Unagi Don and I immediately fell in love with it. So crispy the skin is and so juicy the inside is. I can't forget the taste for so long a time. If I travel to Japan in the future, I think I will go there and have a bowl of Unagi Don again.
The name of the restaurant is Notoyo Nishiten (のとよ 西店). It’s located inside of the Nishiki Market in Kyoto, Japan.
Besides the delicious Unagi Don, I have many good memories about the city, Kyoto. Unlike Tokyo, Kyoto doesn’t look like a big city. The narrow roads between buildings are just like the alleys in my hometown Hangzhou, connecting the whole city. There are no skyscrapers or even tall buildings. No bright colors for exterior walls of buildings as well. I felt like I was brought back to many years ago, in a quiet, simple yet elegant place. Kyoto preserves traces from the past. You can find shrines hidden between ordinary residential buildings, and the shrines, small or big, all seem to be protected well. Kyoto is so unique.
When we visited Kyoto in the 2018 summer, there were days of extremely heavy rain, which caused floods and landslides in the city. The trains from Kyoto to other cities were suspended. It was bad. And I remember I brought a kimono to Japan so that I could wear it, walk around the city Kyoto, and take some nice pictures in it. But that wish didn’t come true because of the heavy rain. Nevertheless, Kyoto is amazing and I want to visit there again if I have a chance.
